Escondido Offers Up to 10 Free Sandbags Per Resident ID as City Issues Winter Storm Preparation Guide

ESCONDIDO, San Diego County — October 25, 2026. Escondido residents preparing for the fall and winter rainy season can obtain free sandbags through a city program, according to official storm-readiness guidance released October 22. The city emphasizes preventive work around gutters, drains and roofs before heavy rain occurs.

Where and when can residents get sandbags?

Sandbags are available at the Escondido Sports Center in Kit Carson Park, 3315 Bear Valley Parkway. The city says to check in at the Sports Center Customer Counter with a photo ID showing an Escondido address. Filling is self-service, so bring a shovel. The published schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., with a limit of 10 sandbags per photo ID. Verify current availability and holiday hours before making a trip.

What is the city asking property owners to do?

In its “Stay Ready, Rain or Shine” resource guide, Escondido recommends clearing gutters and property drainage areas, inspecting roofs and trees, and keeping streets and storm drains free of debris. The city says it maintains crews that can respond during weather events and that staff monitor reservoir levels, sewer systems and backup equipment. These are preparedness measures, not a claim that a local flood is occurring today.

How to report trouble or travel safely

The city’s guide links to Report It for non-emergency issues such as blocked drains, debris on sidewalks and fallen signs. Dial 911 for an emergency. Drivers should heed temporary signs and never enter a flooded roadway. The city also advises treating dark or flashing-red traffic signals as four-way stops when safe to do so, consistent with applicable traffic rules.
